I provide individual tutoring services for students in grades K-12, seeking to improve or expand their command of English Language Arts. I include reading, grammar, and writing in my tutoring services. We utilize a combination of the student's own course material, IXL, and additional material as needed.
I am able to tutor either at a public library, at my home, or via ZOOM. I do not go to your home or to your school. I also am not affiliated with a tutoring service. However, if you wish to be connected with a tutoring service, I am happy to provide referrals. If you are affiliated with a religious or community organization in the area, I am willing to research options to hold sessions there, particularly if we have a small group of students from the same parish/center.
Tutoring at my home only works best when we have a shared common interest, such as a common affiliation with a religions or community organization, common neighbors, co-workers or other common affiliation. Otherwise, ZOOM or the public library also offers excellent options for learning!
I develop an individual learning plan for each student.
FIRST, students (or the parents) state one or more specific learning goals.
SECOND, we proceed with a few diagnostics.
THIRD, we create a plan to meet the specific learning goals.
FOURTH, we meet our goals!!!
Stated Learning Goals
A few specific learning goals that students and their parents may have are
prepraing for a high school or college entrance exam
boosting reading comprehension
learning to enjoy language arts and reading
help with homework
phonics, fluency, and word recognition (grades K-4)
learning English for the first time
Or some students may wish to pursue a high-powered approach to learning, such as (1) writing their own book of poetry, (2) writing a short story, (3) reading three novels over the summer, (4) reviewing grammar for the upcoming year in school, or (5) journaling.
Diagnostics
After you state your goals, I administer a diagnostic test. Included in the diagnostic is a short baseline quiz.
Our Plan
I use your stated goals combined with additional recommendations based on the diagnostic test to develop a learning plan. (Please note, I am very flexible. We can always modify the plan to meet your budget, schedule, and interests.) Once we have a plan we are all comfortable with we begin! The plan will also detail if any additional materials are needed and will provide a recommended individual study and tutoring session schedule.
We Meet Our Goals
We will complete the plan, and then the student will take a short completion quiz. The results from the baseline are compared with the completion quiz to help assess progress, build confidence, and self-knowledge.
The student leaves with more information about strengths and target areas, ways to maximize individual study, and most importantly, a love of learning!
